Heart

As we have been learning about the heart in our Life Education lessons Mrs Cochet organised for all the classes to have a look and play with a deer's heart. We were able to see all the veins in the heart and the fat that was protecting the heart. We were also able to put a plastic bag on our hand and put our fingers in the valves and feel how they go round the heart. Although a deer's heart is a lot bigger than our own, it was still great to see what we were learning about.

Harold

Over the last few weeks we have been lucky enough to be learning about the circulatory system in the Life Education truck with Harold and Bernie. We are learning about all the different organs; heart, brain, lungs, kidneys, small intestine, muscles; and what we have to do to keep our body working well.

Levity Beet Music Creativity

We were lucky to have one of our students uncles come visit us in Room 19 to show us some of the amazing instruments that he makes. These weren't your everyday guitars or drums but instruments made out of bottles, pipes and everyday materials. Our favourite would definitely have to be the toot suit!! Thank you Levity for coming to share your passion with us.

The NED show

This week on Tuesday we were lucky to have the NED show visit Otonga. The NED show taught us a lot of great values that we can use for the rest of our lives. NEVER give up, ENCOURAGE others, DO your best. Our NED show gal was very entertaining and had some great tricks that she showed us with the yo yo. The yo yo's are on sale at Otonga and some of us have bought some to practice some new tricks.

Science Visit

We were very lucky in the middle school to have a visit from an engineer from a power company to teach us all about how heat travels. She was able to explain to us all about radiation, conduction and convection. We then took this information and learnt all about it in our own words back in class. Heat is our focus for this term and we have already learnt about how we keep our body heat warm and how animals keep warm. We are looking forward to doing some experiments to learnt more about radiation, convection, conduction and insulation.

WOW Science

We had so much fun on our WOW science day because we got to try all different types of science experiments. We got to charm a paper snake, make fake snow, test our reflexes, make gloop, test static energy and learn about density of water. We learnt a lot of new things and are really excited for our science unit this term.

Term 3

Welcome back to school after a well deserved holiday for all the students in Room 19. This term we have a science focus at Otonga and we can't wait to next week for our WOW Science week. In the middle school we are focusing on heat and the ways it moves and how we can insulate ourselves to best keep heat in.  This week we have been working on our beautiful calendar art and can't wait to share these with our parents.

Pyjama Day

Today we had a pyjama day to fundraise money for the devastating Nepal earthquake. We also had our own earthquake drill and  learnt heaps about what we do if there is a earthquake in Rotorua. We have been reading a story about the Canterbury Earthquake and hope that we never have to experience something so terrifying. We hope our money that we raised will go a long way in helping people in Nepal.

Cross Country

On Tuesday we had an awesome day at the school Cross Country. We have been practicing for weeks and were all feeling excited and ready to try our best! It was a beautiful day although it was a bit cold but when we were running we didn't feel the cold at all. We all persevered and tried our very best to never give up. All of us were winners in the end as we all gave it our best go. Room 19 is so proud of Daniel, Brock, Anna and Kate who all got certificates for their great running. They can't wait to go to inter schools.

Pink Shirt Day

On Friday we had a Pink Shirt Day along with a lot of other New Zealanders. This was to raise awareness of bullying. In Room 19 we don't stand for bullying and are all upstanders if we see someone getting bullied. Way to go Room 19!!

Assembly Performance

Today was our assembly performance and we were all very nervous to perform in front of the whole school. We performed two songs Riptide and Tutira Mai. Even though we were nervous we did a great job and made Miss Laurence very proud. We had many compliments from other teachers. It was very exciting to have so many parents come watch and we were so happy that they could see us perform. Thank you.

Assembly Performance

We have been learning a song to perform in assembly which I know some of the children would love to practice at home. The song is Riptide by Vance Joy. We will be performing in assembly in week 6, Friday at 2.15.

Assembly

In class we have practiced the way we are supposed to  sit nicely with our legs and arms crossed, ready to learn. We were aiming to be the best class at Otonga Road Primary School. This week was our first whole school assembly and we won the best class because we were sitting so beautifully. Mrs Elvidge said that our new year 3's really stood out and were doing a great job of being in the middle school.

Week One

Week One in Room 19 was a exciting and busy week!

We started off getting to know each other as well as our new teacher Miss Laurence.

As it was Waitangi Day on Friday we started to learn all about The Treaty Of Waitangi. We asked questions such as; Who signed the treaty? Who is James Busby? How many people signed the treaty?

We then designed our own class treaty and signed it with our name and handprint.
